The Mustang was the faster of the three.

the P51 mustang held a slight speed advantage over the F4U corsair. about 15mph as i recall.

The P-51 Mustang, followed by the Chance Vaught F-4A Corsair and lastly the Thunderbolt.

THE P-51 MUSTANG WITH THE ROLLS ROYCE ENGINE.
THE FASTEST RECIPROCATING ENGINE AIRCRAFT DURING WWII AND LONG AFTER.

  7. The D Man says:

The North Amercian P-51 One Mustang Was Slightly Faster then The F-4U Corsair

About Twenty Miles Per An Hour Or Around that.

Mustang was More long distance aswell

  8. tamarack58 says:

Speed aside if your looking for an iconic airplane of WWII it would be, IMHO, the P51 for the war in Europe and the Corsair for the war in the Pacific. The P-51 is probably the most recognized of the two.

  9. Doggzilla says:

If you want to get technical, the P-47 is the fastest. It was the first aircraft to break 500mph in level flight.
The standard P-47 was the slowest of the three, but there were several versions produced which were modified to intercept buss bombs and me-262’s, and they are the fastest American aircraft of WW2.

I think you might want to choose it based on something besides the speed, there are many reasons that each was a huge part of the war effort.
The P-51 wiped out most of Germany’s airforce, The P-47 decimated the rail and supply chains greatly, destroying tens of thousands of trains alone, and the Corsair was superb in both air to air and air to ground in the hands of the Marines who flew them.
I would go with the Corsair because the Marines kick ass and really made the Japanese suffer when they finally got an aircraft that was any good.

  10. calnickel says:

The P-47 was the fastest piston plane in modified form at over 500MPH.

In operational trim, the Mustang was the fastest piston plane.

Technically, the P-80 was the fastest American WW2 fighter plane, but only four were sent to Italy for training in 1945 and none engaged the Luftwaffe.

If you want fast why not the German ME-262, the first Jet. Although it didn’t much real fighting they did see some action towards the end of the war.

  13. Tim G LAX says:

Without a doubt, it is the Grumman F-8 Bearcat, the replacement to the F-3 Wildcat & F-6 Hellcat. The F-8 is the fastest prop plane ever made. With a production Top speed of 455 MPH, it beats the P-47 & P-51. In modified form, the F-8 holds the world 3k close-circuit record of over 528 MPH!

Now, most people don’t know or recognize the F-8. It didn’t have the storied history of the Thunderbolt, Mustang or other planes of the period. But had the war continued, its reputation would be know far outside the warbird racing & airshow circuits.

But if your going for style & street cred, then by all means, go with the P-51. Even the Thunderbolt pilots can’t argue with the Mustang’s good looks (though I’d rather have the sheer strenght, speed & safety of the P-47 anyday in combat).

Max Speed = 455 mph Cruising Speed: 425 mph
Range: 1650 miles Service Ceiling: 42,300 ft.
Span: 35 ft. 6 in. Length: 27 ft. 6 in.
Height: 13 ft. 10 in. Weight: 9, 300 lbs. Max
